BREATHE (2021)

Artist Statement

The idea of “Breathe” was to turn my space (my bedroom) into a “living” installation. The focus of this piece was frame and movement; each frame was shot in multiple angles and captured the movement of the strings of paper cranes that were hung up in my ceiling. To create the “breathing” effect or the movement, I set up a tower fan and let it oscillated. The LED strip lights were used to add vibrance to the space as well as emphasize the colors of the paper cranes. Lastly, the choice of music was to provide the audience a relaxing experience while witnessing the “breathing” room.

For this piece, I wanted to emphasize the use of colors and the entire space itself. Attached to the strings, I taped approximately 15-20 small and colorful paper cranes and hung them on my ceiling. With the LED strip lights in my room, I decided to use the ‘fade-out’ option to create a more vibrant environment and to make the colors of the paper cranes to pop. The use of the tower fan was quite difficult; the wind speed was too powerful which resulted in the fan tilting up towards the ceiling. Combining all the shots with the music creates a soothing experience for the audience.

RUN AWAY (2021)

Artist Statement

Run Away is a one minute and fifty five second long video which follows a boy during his walk late at night. The usage of different camera angles and audio, captures the stress and anxiety that the situation has creating after listening to the news report. The pace of the video starts off slow; however, it progressively picks up when the actor senses that they are in danger. The audio manipulation as well as the intense heartbeat sound truly emphasizes the character’s emotion as if the audience were to experience the same. The work that I created definitely achieved my goal of capturing the feeling of suspense. Without knowing who or where the criminals are offers a mysterious effect, leaving the audience to think what truly happened to the character.

FROM, THE OUTSIDERS (2021)

Artist Statement

What is an Essay film? An Essay film is a self-reflective and self-referential documentary which evokes responses and make connections for the audiences. “From, The Outsiders”, is essentially my self-reflection through the LGBTQ+ community. As an individual who identifies within this group, I felt that we as a whole have faced many adversities, whether it be personal, societal, or even political. In this film, I have set up an interview with seven interviewees; four which do not identify in the LGBTQ+ community and the remaining three do. Here, they are asked a different set of questions to state and reflect on their personal beliefs about this community and their own experiences.

The bamboo is considered one of the most invasive species of plants. Once it is fully established, it is said to be almost impossible to control. We as a community have faced and will continue to face adversities; however, we have already established our roots and we will not be controlled. The LGBTQ+ community is constantly introducing new genders, identities, sexual orientations and even kinks, there will always room to fight for equality. On the top left corner, I displayed a loop of an LGBTQ+ flag waving in front of a bamboo forest and to the right I included visualized audio waveforms as if the interviewees are speaking to the audience. This flag will forever mascot an uncontrollable community; one that is culturally diverse and truly resilient.
